Acne Pickaxe Scar conditions

Acne & Acne Scarring
Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition characterised by spots called blackheads and pustules which can appear on the face, back and chest. Although harmless they can cause much distress and sometimes they can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (pink acne marks) and indented scarring such as rolling scars and pick-axe scars. These facial scars are difficult to smooth out or remove in coming times and the scars if untreated can last a lifetime.

Acne usually starts in puberty and tends to resolve by the early twenties. However, in some people it can persist throughout their 30s and even 40s. Indeed some people who have never had spots and pimples in their youth may develop them in adulthood.

What causes acne?

There are a number of factors which can cause acne. Generally, acne is caused by the sebaceous glands producing too much oil. In addition, the dead skin cells lining the pores do not shed properly and clog up the follicles. Combined, these two factors create an ideal environment for the acne bacteria that lives on the surface of the skin to multiply. This triggers inflammation and the formation of spots.

Treatment of acne

Depending on the condition of pustules, we recommend patients to apply raw honey to the affected areas each night a short time for a week or so. This reduces the inflammation, especially if manuke or tea-tree honey is used.

Then Aquarius therapists use fractional laser treatments to cover the infected pustules and spots and usually – again depending on the severity – only one treatment is needed. The patient in the photos had his acne completely cleared without scarring and the skin returned to normal.
